The Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation will invest over EUR 138 million for the launch of a new dark fibre network as part of a project called RedIris Nova. Scheduled for completion in 2013, the new dark fibre network is expected to reach all universities, public research institutions and research centres served by RedIris. The project represents a change in the current leased circuits system and increases the transmission capacity to up to 100 Gbps. RedIRIS currently links over 350 academic and research institutions with around 150,000 researchers and targets approximately 2 million potential users. The EUR 138 million project is financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the European Regional Development Fund.
